Food becomes really important in the Great Outdoors! Be sure to test recipes at home before you head out! Here are some of our favorites.
Camp
Cooking: A Backpacker's Pocket Guide: by Bill and Jo McMorris. This is a great little (small enough to bring along) cookbook. Do ahead meals, notes on packaging. Recipes are realistic and tasty. We especially like their "Best Guide's Bread."
The One-Burner Gourmet: by Harriet Barker. Complete and practical. Everything from jerky to mixes to casseroles. Lots of tips. If you can only purchase one book, this
is it. Backcountry Cooking: From Pack to Plate in 10 Minutes: by Dorcas Miller. Over 144 recipes from the editors of Backpacker Magazine, along with tips.
Cooking
on a Stick: Campfire Recipes for Kids: by Linda White and Fran Lee. Couldn't resist listing this fun book. Cooking on a stick or in a pouch is great fun if you're car camping with kids in a place that allows "real" fires. These recipes are obviously not
intended for wilderness camping, but will certainly be a fun camping introduction for kids.
High Trail Cookery: by Linda Frederick Yaffe. Subtitle: All-Natural,
Home-Dried, Palate-Pleasing Meals for the Backpacker This book is great if you'd like to dehydrate and package your own gourmet meals before heading out.
How to Catch Crabs: A Pacific Coast Guide: by Charlie White. Everything you need to know about catching, cleaning & cooking crabs. With excellent illustrations.
